The Hassan II Mosque

Easily the most popular tourist attraction in Casa, the Hassan II Mosque was completed in 1993 at a cost of approximately $800 million. It was built by King Hassan (the father of the current king) as a gift to himself for his 60th birthday. The mosque is considered the second largest in the world, after Mecca itself, and has room for 25,000 worshipers inside and another 80,000 outside. The minaret is the largest in the world and at night the laser at the top points straight towards Mecca. Although designed by a French architech, 6000 Moroccan artisans were employed to complete the work. It is exceptional! A beautiful example of Arab architecture and all the materials are from Morocco.

The Hassan II Mosque is also the only one in Morocco to allow entrance to non-Muslims. For about $13 you can go on a tour with an English speaking guide. Of course, they don't show you everything, but you do get a nice tour and a chance to run into other English-speaking tourists!
